Najib Razak isn't too sweet on Malaysia’s sugar king. According to reports online Robert Kuok, agri-magnate and Malaysia’s richest man, has been donating money to Democratic Action Party. Bullshit says UMNO, who claims he was only to be able to get so rich via the sugar cane concessions given to him by the government. What are you even on about, asks the Kuok family and the DAP. Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz really ran his mouth over it.
Raja Petra Kamarudin is behind the initial report, which has been followed up with a series of pieces about Kuok’s desire for ‘Chinese rule’ in Malaysia, so maybe a grain of sugar is warranted here.
PAS has gone the full PAS. Party president Abdul Hadi Awang has issued an update on a notorious decree from 1981 in which voting for UMNO was haram. Now, it’s all about DAP. For their part, DAP isn’t too concerned about the immediate impact of the comments, focusing instead on what it means for the country. ‘Malaysia does not need Taliban rulers whose role is to 'forbid this and that', and declare people infidels,’ says DAP Selangor leader Edry Faizal.
DAP MP Ong Kian Ming took to Malaysikini to break down economic data which shows what many voters have complained of – a strong economy is only helping the already well off.
Here’s an interesting op-ed about why Chinese-Malaysians are moving away from MCA.
And now we have to talk about quinoa. Najib says he doesn’t eat rice now, it’s all quinoa. Which surely had handlers wincing as the inevitable blowback was swift (and funny). It even got the NYT treatment! Relax please, Najib’s office said, it’s all about staying healthy.
